#393 | Chapter 11, Page 9 Posted by: Clownfish Studios , January 30, 2015 New page and a new Podcast dealing with reboots! Listen to it in the player below! Share! Tweet Gallie Gaylord is nothing but a cluess tool being used as a tool for nefarious purposes. Neska Certainly seems to be the case, however, being clueless, he may very well have told his brother things that the real bad guys wouldn’t want anyone else knowing. Thus, talking to the twit’s brother is not a bad idea. Marlena H. That is so true. It would be interesting to find out if he’s said anything to Leo that is worth hearing. Of course, this is assuming that he is on speaking terms with Leo. He doesn’t seem to like how popular his brother is. Da’Zlein That’s also assuming his brother listens to him, given how he seems to react to mention of his brother, that is a big if… Marlena H. Sweet! We finally get to meet Gaylord’s brother. Based off the hints here and there, this should be quite interesting. Insectoid Not sure what good that will do… Gaylord’s not the biggest problem here, he’s just a pawn of the Marquis. LuRa Witt OMG It’s LEO!!! *swoon* LupoCani Pages! So many pages! Is it just me or is it speeding up as well? Kneon We’re trying! At this point we basically have to “buy time” to make Shadowbinders, if that makes sense. So the output depends on my freelance schedule. :-/ AmberOne Since this character appeared I have tried and tried to ignore it, really I have. But I’ve had all I can stands and I can’t stands no more, WHY THE HELL DID YOU NAME THIS GUY GAYLORD? Of all the names you could have used to signify that this guy is a ***** Gaylord was what you went with? Please tell me WHY? Kambrea Pratt I am not sure what word the asterisk are covering so I can’t be sure what you are asking. I can assume what you are saying, but I would like to be sure before I answer you. AmberOne Wow, well the asterisks are actually covering my vulgar use of felines. Sorry for the crudeness, but… that’s just how it seems to me. Kambrea Pratt We chose the name because it was an older name and it sounded like something that would fit this character, plus we liked it. He thinks he is all that so having the word “lord” in it fit him very much. I am still not sure why it is an issue unless it is because of the first part of the name “gay” and that had no bearing on anything nor is it an implication of anything. My brother’s name is Gaelyn (Gay lynn) and my parents did not name him that to imply anything, although he was teased by childish individuals who picked on him terribly because the word “gay” was in his name. Now he goes by his middle name instead of his cool first name and it kind of makes me sad. My siblings and I all had unusual names. It is just a name and it fit this character. As far as sounding like a ” p u s s y” Well he kind of is, and he is kind of an arrogant tool, and he is so desperate to be liked and to be as loved as his brother he will follow crazed madmen/madwomen and believe them. AmberOne Okay, first I have to applaud and thank you for the prompt replies it usually takes a couple of days for people to get back to me. You’ve taken hours. Next, I just want to clarify that it’s not the fact that the “Gay” part of his name is a problem, not even I am that immature. It’s more that the whole thing is an insult. And I know it suits his personality, like I can already tell but to me it seems kind of like having a character who was an asshole an naming him Douchebag. (You know, if douchebag was a real name). I dunno I just think of the comic as a movie or a series and the other characters calling this guy Gaylord in all seriousness, or even worse him introducing himself like that and it just gives me the heebie-jeebies. Don’t ask me why. Kambrea Pratt I’m still not sure how it is insulting? Actually, people do have that name. I have seen it used as a surname and a given name and I don’t see how it is insulting? We only used it because we liked the name. It wouldn’t suit him to call him “Bob.” We try to choose names we feel fit the characters. Gaylord sounds like a noble name. Leopold and Gaylord both struck us as names that seemed regal. We never meant it to mean “douchebag”. Although Thom said “Duke Douchebag has a nice ring to it” and he also said “Lord Farquaad” was already taken. If this is about the internet slang…we didn’t do it for that reason either. Frankly, until you said something, we didn’t even know people used it as a slang term on the internet. Then again our last name is Pratt and that can be used as a derogatory term in some places, but it is just a name. What’s in a name? In this case nothing. We didn’t give him the name to imply “gay” or “douchebag” although in retrospect, the douchebag part could be fitting and apparently worked out nicely (for this character) We picked the name years ago. I’m sorry if the name gives you the “heebie-jebbies”. I get that. I know people who can’t stand certain words and those words can cause them to feel annoyed. The word “moist” for example, drives my mom crazy! But let me assure you, the name was not intended as any kind of insult or insinuation. It was just a noble sounding name that struck us as fitting for this character. That is all. Sebastian Giorgi as you said its a name as any other… and i know you didnt imply anthing, but… how can i say it… in my country theres a guy called marcelo caputo… neither marcelo nor caputo ar “badwords” but, marcelocaputo makes it sound like “loca puto” wich means “crazy faggot” in the most offensive way you can imagine… now, that is hating your children, is like, someone said, never call your son michael if your lastname is hunt… or things like that you know… i understand you were not making a joke with the name… but everyone who reads this comic at least one time laughed at the coincidence… of his name been so… descriptive… im one of those with an “old people” name(mostly because its a family tradition, to use father name as a second name…) the name is “Ricardo”. and im kind of proud of it… and if i ever know someone who is called gaylord, or pussypresident, or whatever, i will just shake his hand and say hi like i do with everybody else… (even if i will think their parents didnt want him to have that much of a social life in school…) i know you will read all of my comment, but for those who dont want to read that much here is the short version… SHORT VERSION: gaylord is a name, and have nothing to do with him been “not so manly”, no one is responsable of their own names, but those who name them, should know that not everyone in the world would take the named seriously if their name sound like a childish joke. Kambrea Pratt Actually, he was named years ago. He has been in the comic since 2011 and no one had any issue until now. It was not intentional and we had absolutely no idea that it is used as some kind of slur. It sounded regal and dorky. That is why it was picked. But then again, I guess we could have named someone “Richard” because then we are being offensive because we are calling someone “Dick” It is just funny to us because he has been around for 3 years and no one has mentioned anything about it and suddenly it is an issue. It is just a name and it was never meant to be offensive. Believe it or not, people here don’t use it as a “bad” term. In retrospect I wish we were clever enough to have come up with that, but it was truly accidental and not ever meant to be a “childish joke” name. It’s not our style. Well all I can say is 1. It was not intentionally meant to be offensive 2. It is just a name (and a REAL name at that ) and we are not changing it now. 3. I feel bad now if someone is actually named Gaylord because I can’t imagine how much crap they and their family will take because someone made it a slang term when it is just a name. I am trying to figure out how it even became an insult other than the childish “it has gay in it” 4. I just can’t believe that this is still going on and we are having this discussion. 5. Thom is amused. 6. We can always use the trump card that Belaytr is another world and “Gaylord” probably doesn’t mean anything negative there. Plus we have roots in steampunk and “gay” wasn’t even offensive until like the 1950’s. It is completely plausible someone would have this name. 7. Can we move on now? Thanks for liking the comic. Kneon Actually, Gaylord is just his middle name. His first name is Richard, but he was afraid of being teased. … (No, not really.) Sebastian Giorgi well, you are right, actually one of my favourite books has the word gay in its old meaning… “the vampire”… and again, im not saying that you made it as a joke, the fact that gay is today one of the many ways to say homosexual, and lord, is used to talk about powerful people, be it a king, or a god or whatever… saying gaylord, is like saying lord of homosexuals… or something like that… so, its actually a two words coincidence, anyway, im just saying that most people would at least notice the coincidence and move on… wich is what i did until i found this conversation… in no way would i recomend to change the name of the character, that would be insulting! im an artist to, i write songs, and if theres something i hate, is the people who want the artist to change their work… so, i would NEVER try yo change another artist work… again, great comic, and sorry if i was rude or something like that, im actually from argentina, and when i speak in english i just translate the words i usually say in spanish, sometimes, it does not make any sense, sometimes, it sounds agresive when im not trying to be agresive, and some other times, it sounds silly when im serious… Kambrea Pratt I wasn’t offended, nor did I think you were overly aggressive (the problem with the internet…you can’t gauge tone) I was just making sure everyone understood that it was not chosen to be offensive nor was it intentional. It was just a name that suited the character. Sebastian Giorgi its a really greate comic, if it was me, you could name your characters toaster and television, and it would not be any less of a good story, (even if the names were funny) keep the art growing, you are making such a wonderfull universe here. S+ “Damp.” Never name a character “Damp,” or I’m outta here. I can’t stand that word. It makes my skin crawl. And “Puff,” too. Kneon *Crosses ‘Doctor Damp’ off the list of names.* OctopusGardener Umm, Gaylord is actually a legitimate name. It’s also the name of a city in Michigan, so it’s most likely not intended as an insult Da’Zlein “Oh my brother Gaylord? That guy’s a total putz, he doesn’t even realize the most important part of being a ruler!” “Which would be?” “Poofy pants obviously! Nobody can argue against your leadership as long as your pants are poofy enough! Oh and don’t forget all the lovely gentlemen who will do you many… favors when you get power.” “Maybe we should’ve asked someone else…” Gallie Any chance the choice for Gaylord’s last name, Pinchot, is a nod to Chilean dictator Pinochet, who made thousands in his country disappear? Or is that just coincidence? Kambrea Pratt I is coincidence and I wish we were that clever. Actually, Leo Pinchot was named first (the last name was chosen to help with a nickname Leo will have later) and then Gaylord was named afterwards. Sebastian Giorgi as long as you dont have another dictator with a name close to “videla” (an argentinian dictator, who also disappeared lots of people… why is it that dictators seem to think the best way to get something away is to make it look like it never existed? kind of odd…even if it works for them…) maarvarq I’m here courtesy of Webcomics Worth Wreading. lt always takes me a while to get through the archives of a new strip, but now I’m up to date and eager to see what happens next! Kneon Thank you so much for stopping by and all the great comments!!
