Especially when it’s a tax write off. Ragingagnostic I’d accept poofy shirts as a business expense only if he were a supermodel. :/ Llama118 the irony being that he’s just gonna keep wearing that red longcoat Kneon Ah, but it’s what’s under the coat that drives the girls mad. …. His poofy silk shirts! josephsinger What’s under that’s not bad either …:P Insectoid Hey, friendly faces again, finally! 😀 ExPaladin Of course. josephsinger So those kissing incentives really gave me hope .. does Rhen really run both ways? Kam Unfortunately no. However, you will LOVE Leo. He is an upcoming character who can potentially have crushes on both Rhen and Mia. Kneon Leo would make Captain Jack Harkness blush. Jacob Will he have that same personality, where introducing himself is flirting? Kneon He’s… a handful. LuRa Witt stunning architecture! Kneon I always told Kam that my dream house would be a “new” Victorian house. Tristan Alkai Hi. Found your comic a few days ago from one of your banner ads and read through the archives. Nice work! Speaking of your archives, the index page only has links up to the end of chapter 7 for some reason. I notice mostly because I habitually place bookmarks on the “index” page rather than the “most recent” page of comics I frequent. Since people are most likely wondering, Tristan Alkai is a name I have used in a few other places on the Net; the detail that this comic happens to include a character also named Tristan is coincidence. Kam Welcome aboard! Thank you for reading and for all your great comments. The archive page needs updated. I will remind Thom to catch it up, but he is back logged a bit right now and it could be a bit. Tristan is a cool name and I think it is cool that your user name is Tristan, even if it isn’t because of our comic. 😉 tanzeda Found your comic through Girl Genius yesterday. All caught up and LOVING it! Kam Thank you! Welcome aboard! Purplefire Fantastic web comic! I’ve enjoyed reading through the story so far and I’m looking forward to new pages! Kam Thank you so much and welcome aboard! nesu42 Hey, I just started reading this comic today and I’ve gone through the whole archive. Great comic! But he can’t write off the shirts . . . they aren’t required for his profession . . . (sorry! I’m a tax preparer! I know these things!) Kneon Ah, but you’d be amazed what you can slip past the auditors with a little magic razzle dazzle. 😉 Welcome board! Oarboar And let’s not forget that this is a whole different world, let alone a different country, where tax law might be different. (But as a future CPA myself, I do appreciate this particular geekiness.) nesu42 Hey, I’m not alone then! Now, if he was a giggolo the silk shirts, cologne, etc would definitely be valid business expenses. Kam Well he is popular with the ladies and he has a lot of money. Makes one wonder. Kneon New MIA’S JOURNAL posted! http://comic.shadowbinders.com/tag/mias-journal/ We may be going back and adding “photos” to each of these entries in the not-too-distant future, as originally planned… kat0vampire technically… if he made himself incorporated, and he made himself chairman, treasurer, purchasing and supply manager, and head Currier, then made uniforms mandatory to higher level employees, then made these uniforms susceptible to preference but subject to dress-code (like how a private school or girl-scouts have a school/scout store that has lots of different ‘uniform’ stuff that could lead to very many unique looks, but dress-code says you HAVE to wear stuff from the store as uniform) then decided that these uniforms would be supplied by the company. then as the chairman, he decided that the criteria for these uniforms would be relatively lax, such as being ‘designer’ or ‘nice looking’, and leave individual item choice to the purchasing and supply manager. then as purchasing and supply manager requested permission to buy these items in person instead of online, buying in sizes and numbers directly corresponding to the averages of those buying the uniform (median-ing out to his size, one each). then as an employee, he requests the garments he wants from these pre-approved uniform pieces, and then proudly wears his new uniform. and technically the cologne could be considered bathroom supplies if he buys multiple, keeps it in the bathrooms, and gives the others permission to use it. im back btw. 🙂 i know you guys missed my long over-analyzations XD nesu42 All that is valid, but he clearly doesn’t have a uniform code for his ship. Everyone seems to wear what thedy feel like, and Winston doesn’t even bother with pants . . . kat0vampire not with the ‘mandatory to higher level employees’ bit. technically, as head Currier, he would be a high level employee. but the others could be at entry or intermediate level. so technically, as long as he doesn’t put someone else in charge for a substantial amount of time, hes good. nesu42 If it was a larger crew, that would work better. With so few people, while he may be head courier, Tristan would clearly be Chief Engineer. Which would be a senior position requiring a uniform. Everyone else could be entry-level though. If he gets Tristan into a uniform, even without a frilly silk shirt, then your proposition would hold and he’d have valid business expenses. kat0vampire hmmmmmmm, i guess it would have to be ‘encouraged for higher level employees’ then. and even if he didn’t, as long as he got them all at least one ‘uniform’ and then was just lax about enforcing the dress-code, or only enforced it for official public appearances, which isn’t weird seeing as its a job that is dawn to dusk and requires them to be on call 24/7. it might even be a perk that people who had been with the company long enough get some leeway on their personal dress-code enforcement or have the option of taking advantage of it. like some kind of weird 10year, except instead of being hard to fire they get cool company stuff. nesu42 Leeway for longterm associates could explain Winston’s “tie and no pants” look, but then the newest folk (Mia, Andrew) would be expected to have the strictest dress-code. Andrew could be excempt, since he’s just a kid, but Mia has been presented as a crewmember (if only temporarily) with no comment as to her clothing. Which is rather an oversight on Rhen’s part, since even beyond the question of uniforms her foreign clothes stand out. Simply getting Mia something local to wear could be counted as a business expense, as it would be an employee benefit. Kam Mia most likely will have a change of clothes at some point. So I guess he can write that off. Winston. He would have to have specially made pants to go over those large feet. Rhen could pay for that, but Winston prefers to just wear a tie and keep his assets free. LuRa Witt How fast does Rhen go thru shirts? Are there occasional hordes of fans ripping his clothes off? Kam Rhen likes to think so. It is just a vanity thing. Like all the stuff in his bathroom. Aryn Regarding the discussion involving uniforms, hundreds of years ago non military ships only had the captain and possibly the first mate wearing uniforms in order to make them easier to identify and let the crew know who is in charge. The crew wore whatever they desired because when wearing a uniform a specific crew member would have been harder to identify when wearing the same clothes as everybody else. This also has the added benefits of making the captain easier to notice and therefore easier to follow and take orders from in a crisis and allowing people outside of the crew to realize who the captain is without having to ask. If you are still focused on comparing the crew to a business, some businesses employ mainly temporary employees and only make the boss and possibly supervisors wear uniforms so people can tell who is in charge and can fire them on a whim (temporary employees never get a raise and can be fired when desired without taking disciplinary action first or requiring a reason to do so so some businesses make their entire work force temporary employees and never hire them permanently even in countries with strong labour laws) Aryn I should also add, back in the era where wooden ships were common they would spend months and sometimes years away from any land but were not equipped with facilities for bathing, the water instead being rationed for drinking and in the case of steam punk flying ships also used for flying with not even the ocean as a source of water for fuel. That would generate a ton of dirty clothes which would mean in this captain’s case buying new clothes is far easier than washing a hundred uniforms by hand. I suppose that steam powered washing machines would exist in this case but I did not see any on the ship. SotiCoto Clouds, dude. You think an airship powered by “fuckin magnets” can’t gather water from clouds? Anything is officially declared feasible on account of mirac- … I mean “magic”.
